When I first started writing for The Kitchn, I was intimidated by Dutch ovens. They seemed like a tool for experienced chefs, which, at the time, I definitely was not. But the more Dutch oven reviews I read — and the more I listened to my colleagues rave about them — the more convinced I became that I needed one. My roommate bought one a few months ago to use for Thanksgiving, but its 7-quart size is not at all practical for everyday cooking (or for our tiny kitchen.) Then I did some browsing and came across Caraway’s petite cooker.

Although it can function as a Dutch oven, this piece can do so much more. And now it’s available in seven gorgeous limited-edition colors! I haven’t stopped reaching for mine ever since I got it, and once you buy yours, I’m sure you’ll experience the same desire to use it every single day. The fact that it has a 2-quart capacity and looks so chic on my stove is merely the cherry on top.

What Is the Petite Cooker?

Caraway’s petite cooker is essentially the smaller version of its stockpot, but if you mainly use your stockpot for boiling pasta or making soup, I’ll have you know that this tiny but mighty kitchen staple is much more versatile than that. As I mentioned, it has a 2-quart capacity with tall sides, so it’s meant to be used more like a saucepan or rice cooker.

The petite pot is also made of Caraway’s signature ceramic material that’s free of harmful “forever chemicals” (namely, Teflon and other toxins you don’t want in your cookware). What I love most about this pot, though, is that it’s compatible with all stovetops, and it’s safe to use in the oven up to 550 degrees Fahrenheit. The pot’s non-toxic coating also happens to be nonstick, which makes cleanup a breeze.

The petite cooker is available in Caraway’s classic and iconic colors, but as of today it now also comes in seven limited-edition hues that are beautiful enough to double as decor. Add a pop of color to your kitchen with shades like Lavender and Brick Red, or stick to neutrals with hues like Stone and Emerald for a classic look. There are so many stunning options, so you’re bound to find the perfect one for your kitchen.

Why I Love the Petite Cooker

For a couple of months, I was on a meal prep kick. I would cook big batches of food so I could eat the leftovers for my work lunches. But I soon realized that I get bored quickly eating the same meal, so I prefer to cook one small meal at a time. The petite cooker is perfect for that; its 2-quart capacity is just the right size for single-person batches, regardless of whether I’m cooking rice for dinner or oatmeal for breakfast.

During winter, I’ve been especially into stews, and this kitchen workhorse is great for that, too. The petite cooker gets hot all over very quickly, and I find that it boils my carrots and potatoes so much faster than the pot I used to use. (Make sure you use oven mitts when handling the pot, as its lid handle and side handles get very hot, too.) I’ve also used my pot in the oven to bake pasta, and the results are restaurant-worthy, if I may say so.

As for my pot’s sky blue color, its beauty pretty much speaks for itself. The seven new hues won’t stay in stock forever, so be sure to grab your petite cooker while you can. It’s just as gorgeous as it is functional.
