Doomsday Clock moves closer to midnight than ever before, marking unprecedented danger

UNDATED (CNN/CNN Newsource/WKRC) – The Doomsday Clock has moved closer to midnight than ever before.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has set the Doomsday Clock at 89 seconds to midnight, marking the closest it has ever been to the symbolic point of global catastrophe. Established in 1947, the Doomsday Clock serves as a metaphorical gauge of humanity’s proximity to self-destruction, aiming to spark discussion on complex scientific issues such as climate change.

“Midnight” on the clock represents the moment when humans will have rendered Earth uninhabitable. Daniel Holz, chair of the Science and Security Board at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, emphasized the gravity of the situation.

“In setting the clock closer to midnight, we send a stark signal,” Holz said. “Because the world is already perilously close to the precipice, any move towards midnight should be taken as an indication of extreme danger and an unmistakable warning. Every second of delay in reversing course increases the probability of global disaster. It is now 89 seconds to midnight. This is the closest the world has ever been to midnight.”

The decision to move the clock forward reflects a lack of progress on global challenges, including nuclear risks, climate change, biological threats, and advances in disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence. For the past two years, the clock had been set at 90 seconds to midnight, primarily due to factors such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the potential for a nuclear arms race, the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, and ongoing climate concerns.
