While he’s only been in Green Bay for a single season, Packers defensive passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley has made his mark on the club. Not only was he part of a significant defensive turnaround in his first year on the Packers’ staff, but Ansley used his prior experience with safety Xavier McKinney at Alabama to help earn him first-team All-Pro honors in 2024.
Now, it appears that Ansley is a hot name on the coaching market again. The Atlanta Falcons announced on Thursday that they had completed an interview with Ansley for their open defensive coordinator position, the first such interview that Ansley has reportedly been requested for this offseason.
Ansley is the fourth candidate to interview for the job, along with Wink Martindale, Jeff Ulbrich and Lou Anarumo, who like Ansley all have former NFL defensive coordinator experience. After making the jump from the college level in 2017, Ansley served as defensive backs coach for the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers, as well as the defensive coordinator title for the Chargers in 2023.
The Falcons’ head coach is Raheem Morris, who has coached the defensive side of the ball in the past, so it’s uncertain whether or not this coordinator position would come with play-calling opportunities or not.
Quickly, the Packers’ coaching staff is looking less stable going into the 2025 season. Quarterbacks coach Tom Clements has already retired and defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich was let go on Thursday. On top of that, Ansley, defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich are all taking outside interviews for promotions with other clubs.
