How Perfecting the Balance of Humor And Crimes Became Will Trent Season 3’s Secret Weapon

How Perfecting the Balance of Humor And Crimes Became Will Trent Season 3’s Secret Weapon

Initially, Will Trent would only feature horrific crimes.

However, these days, the series has learned to balance their crime scenes with lighthearted humor in the third season.

Many of Will Trent’s crimes have focused on the past, especially Will and Angie’s childhood trauma.

Will Trent’s Cases Often Have a Personal Note

Will has struggled with forgotten foster children or those with learning disabilities. His goal is to ensure that children are protected.

Meanwhile, Angie’s kryptonite is teenage girls who are survivors of sexual assault. Since the beginning, she’s strived to rescue teens from a trafficking ring and protect Crystal so they don’t end up like her. That didn’t end so well for her.

While Will Trent Season 3 has included some violent crimes, the series has also explored different parts of Will and Angie’s lives instead of only focusing on their childhood trauma. Faith has also led some cases as well.

The series has also injected some humor, whether during the team solving the case together or some sexy romance to lighten up an episode.

Will Trent has always excelled at being a different kind of procedural, but now they’re taking it to the next level.

The Best Cases Highlighted Faith or Will’s Pasts

Will Trent focused on different parts of Will and Faith’s pasts that we hadn’t studied yet. Faith acted like a badass as she tried to confront Rafael Wexford in Will Trent Season 3 Episode 1, only to discover he had a history with Will.

Rafael and Will’s fight was one of the season’s funniest and most realistic scenes. It was violent but brotherly since they both stopped when Rafael’s grandmother arrived. Neither wanted to upset her.

Will knew what Rafael could do, but there were certain lines he wouldn’t cross, and Will felt he owed him. We still don’t know why, but Rafael and his grandma cared for Will after he aged out of foster care.

That’s a period we know little about.

Faith has stepped up this season, both in that case and when her mom went missing in Will Trent Season 3 Episode 5.

That was the most emotional installment because it highlighted that even when mother-daughter relationships are tense, they’ll do anything for each other.

The flashbacks showed more about when Faith had Jeremy, so she now understood the challenges of being a mother, like her mom understood not holding on as tight.

We hated seeing Evelyn Mitchell in danger, but we appreciated seeing the complexities of their relationship.

Involving the Entire Team to Solve Cases Has Provided Lots of Laughs in Will Trent Season 3

While it was rare to have the GBI and APD work together in Will Trent Seasons 1 and 2, they’ve teamed up several times in Season 3.

Seeing both teams re-enact the poisoning at Sorvano’s was priceless. Caroline and Franklin got into their parts, especially Franklin, as they suspected his character poisoned everyone.

Will has branched out so much. Not long ago, he never would have asked for assistance, so he’s evolved into inviting everyone to help him solve a case.

The spy case in Will Trent Season 3 Episode 4 also provided many laughs. Watching Will, Angie, Faith, and Michael leapfrog around the furniture to avoid footprints was priceless.

It provided some needed levity since that was the first time Will and Angie had seen each other since he arrested her, and tensions were high.

Additionally, seeing so many throwbacks to Alias provided entertainment. It was an ingenious way to meet recruits in an online Alias forum because avid fans would believe spy theories.

It was even funnier that Will and Faith had never heard of the series, so they had a viewing party along with Marion to understand Hannah Anderson and the handler’s mindset.

Maybe the series will throw back to another ABC favorite sometime. That would be fun.

Will Trent Season 3 Has Highlighted the Quirks in the GBI and APD

One of the best parts about Will Trent Season 3 is that the series has highlighted the team dynamics and its partnerships.

When Will first returned, it was hilarious that both Amanda and Faith threw things at him and taunted him about Nico’s reaction. They acted like any other family, even if they were not blood-related.

It’s also been refreshing that Faith and Will have seemed more like Amanda’s equals since she’s out of her element raising a teenager.

She never knows what to expect, and it’s hilarious when they offer everyday parenting advice.

Sometimes, Amanda still acted like the mother bear, like when she stopped Will and Faith from shouting like siblings in the middle of the GBI offices.

Everyone lets it out this season, which is better than bottling it.

Angie and Michael’s partnership has also been showcased more this season. At times, it’s been humorous, like when they raced around in her golf cart.

Those two would have each other’s backs through anything, which Michael demonstrated as he saved her from John Shelley and later believed Angie’s instincts when they changed.

Whether they’re laughing or solving cases, these two are partners for life and have become one of the most entertaining pairs of the third season.

New Romances Allowed for Sexy Moments and Fun Distractions

The new romances have added some fun distractions for the characters and the viewers.

While I love Will and Angie, this break also allows them to explore healthier options. Will seems more laid back around Marion.

It initially felt like a fun distraction, like that sexy kitchen kiss during the storm, but they showed up for each other during a crisis.

Will comforted her after she had been attacked, and even though she was still dealing with the aftermath, she showed up for him since she knew how a child trafficking case would affect him.

(Zac Popik/Disney)

Those little moments have added to their relationship and have convinced me they might have a chance.

Michael has spent most of this season moping about his divorce, but in Will Trent Season 3 Episode 8, he finally turned a corner, thanks to Ariana Madix.

While his friends have tried to support him, he needed a sexy stranger to get him out and show him that dancing and old-school cases were still fun.

Seeing that choreographed number made us smile and lightened up the seriousness of that installment. Michael hasn’t smiled like that in ages, so we’re begging Ariana Madix to return.

(Zac Popik/Disney)

That’s how guest arcs should be — entertaining and making you long for more.
