“We’re not here to judge, Kiah, we’re here to witness.” An intriguing official trailer is available for a peculiar little indie sci-if film called Can I Get a Witness, the latest film from filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming. This premiered at TIFF 2024 last fall, and should be out in theaters soon. It’s more of a utopian sci-fi feature about a future world where humanity seems to have made everyone equal without any class division – but at the cost of people over 50 required to pass on in order to control the population. This is a bit like Logan’s Run, of course, but seems more ethereal and charming in its depiction of this possible future. Blending live action & animation, the film is set in a world in which travel & technology are virtually banned, and people who reach the age of 50 have to submit to required death – while young people are tasked with artistically documenting their final moments. TIFF says Can I Get a Witness? is an “inspired look at what memories — and catastrophic climate change — might look like.” Starring Keira Jang, Joel Oulette, and Sandra Oh. I gotta admit I’m really interested in this – seems like it has some provocative ideas being experimented on.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Ann Marie Fleming’s Can I Get a Witness, direct from YouTube:
Intro via TIFF: “Oh’s Ellie lives with her teenage daughter Kiah (Keira Jang), who is starting her first day as a Documenter, an important role in this new world order. She uses her artistic gifts — beautifully conjured in animations — to draw the dying ceremonies, since printing and photography have been banned. Kiah is paired with Daniel (Joel Oulette), the young man who performs the contractual elements of each person’s end-of-life ceremony. He matter-of-factly provides the packages a person can choose, sets them up when the time comes, and performs the burials. But his new coworker is having a hard time handling the emotional impacts of the job.” Can I Get a Witness is written and directed by the Canadian-Japanese filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming, director of the films The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam, The French Guy, and Window Horses previously, plus many other short films. Produced by Ann Marie Fleming, Raymond Massey, Ruth Vincent. This first premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last year. Ann Marie Fleming’s Can I Get a Witness will debut in select US theaters coming soon in early 2025 – stay tuned. Who’s curious to watch?
