CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A new study found that people who use marijuana frequently could suffer from impaired working memory, the short-term memory used for daily tasks.
A new study published in JAMA Network Open indicated that “heavy lifetime cannabis use was associated with lower brain activation during a working memory task.” Working memory is “the ability to hold information in mind and manipulate it for brief periods of time during complex cognitive tasks,” according to ScienceDirect.com. Examples of this include remembering your grocery list or safely chance lanes while driving, according to The Economic Times.
The study involved over 1,000 participants and found that 63% of the heavy cannabis users experienced the lower brain activation, indicating a possible connection.
The lead author of the study said the research did not indicate whether or not the brain activity resumes normal function after quitting cannabis for an extended period of time, according to CNN.
