No Budget Filmmaking Comedy ‘Superboys of Malegaon’ Trailer #2

“We all need comedy and some laughter in life!” Amazon MGM Studios has revealed the second trailer for a comedy from India called Superboys of Malegaon, ready for release in the US in select theaters starting February 28th. The meta comedy is about a wannabe, penniless filmmaker trying to make a film in his small town with his friends. Based on a true story, Superboys chronicles the life and work of self-made auteur Nasir Shaikh, whose no-budget, community-sourced productions turned his hometown into an unlikely dream factory. The film is “an inspiring ode to tenacity, self-actualization, and the sheer fun of filmmaking.” Superboys stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora as the three friends. It originally premiered at TIFF 2024 last fall and played at the London Film Festival. “Brimming with comedy, adventure, & colourful characters, [it’s] a testament to the wonders that can be achieved when imagination is matched with resourcefulness, loyalty, and lots of love.” This is an obvious feel-good story, especially with their parents giving them the salute, but maybe we do need to enjoy more of these enjoyable, inspiring films.

Superboys of Malegaon is a film based on the life of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur filmmaker from the town of Malegaon in Central India (see Google Maps). The residents of the town look to Bollywood cinema for a much needed escape from daily drudgery. Nasir gets inspired to make a film for the people of Malegaon, by the people of Malegaon. He gets his ragtag group of friends together to bring his vision to life, thereby bringing a fresh lease of life into the town. The film is a poignant yet uplifting take on both filmmaking and friendship – and what happens when those two worlds collide. Superboys of Malegaon is directed by Indian filmmaker Reema Kagti, director of the films Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, and Gold previously, plus a few episodes of “Dahaad” and “Made in Heaven” most recently. The screenplay is written by Varun Grover and Reema Kagti. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Farhan Akhtar. This is premiering at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival this month.
