Rory McIlroy reveals what wife Erica wants after divorce drama

Rory McIlroy has struggled at times with the balancing act of “trying to be the best golfer” and the “best” family man.

The four-time major champion, 35, expanded on life’s ups and downs in the third season of the Netflix docuseries “Full Swing,” which chronicled his stunning divorce reversal from wife Erica Stoll last summer.

“There’s parts of my life that I like to keep as private as possible. Unfortunately, in this line of work, that isn’t always possible. I’ve always tried to be protective of my loved ones from people that have ill intentions. I think it was a wake-up call for me to say, ‘Let’s just focus on the golf for a little bit,’” McIlroy said in the third episode of the series that bowed Tuesday on the streaming platform.

McIlroy originally filed for divorce from Stoll after seven years of marriage in May 2024, days before the opening round of the PGA Championship.

The couple, parents to 4-year-old daughter Poppy, reconciled in June when the Northern Irishman came within striking distance of an elusive fifth major at the U.S. Open, a prize ultimately won by LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau.

Ahead of the tournament at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, McIlroy spoke to 2014 U.S. Open champ Martin Kaymer about Stoll’s future desires.

“If it was up to her, she wouldn’t move to England straightaway but she definitely wants to spend more time there,” he said.

Although the family has put the matter behind them, McIlroy expressed in the docuseries that balancing his professional endeavors and private life hasn’t been without challenges.

“Sometimes I’ve struggled with the balance of trying to be the best golfer, trying to be the best husband or the best dad. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and it can be a little too much for me,” McIlroy said, as covered by The Mirror.

McIlroy married Stoll in a star-studded at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017. They welcomed Poppy three years later.

Stoll supported McIlroy at the Scottish Open last July.

“Thankfully, everything has worked out for the best, and we’re happy and moving forward and can’t wait for what lies ahead,” McIlroy said on “Full Swing.”

The world No. 3 is off to a hot start year after winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this month.

The victory marked McIlroy’s 27th PGA Tour title.
