Did anyone else expect this to be a different kind of Fire Country episode? I know the promos are meant to incite anticipation, but the one for “My Team” is all lies at this point.
In fact, this episode contained a number of misleads, and while we’ll get to those, there was still a lot about the story that worked.
This season of Fire Country has gone above and beyond to craft better episodic tales that feel less about the shock value and more about how each situation changes the characters.
Gabriela was the first character to see significant improvement and growth, with her character currently on a journey of self-discovery. Now, it’s Bode’s turn.
Edgewater Has Not Exactly Been the Most Gracious to Its Hometown Hero
At least fans still rooting for Gabriela and Bode to get back together were given a break from “Bodrey,” no matter how adorable the rest of us think they are as a couple.
Although, if anything, Fire Country Season 3 Episode 13 showed just how long of a way Bode has come and how far he still has to go.
First, does everyone from Bode’s past hate him? I can’t think of a single genuinely pleasant interaction he has had reacquainting himself with the townsfolk.
Remember in Fire Country Season 1 Episode 14 when Bode ran into that guy with the two sons, one of which was thrown from a carnival ride? Bode was treated like a stain on Edgewater’s history.
However, like on “A Fair to Remember,” Bode and, in this case, Drew came around in the end with Drew seeing Bode for the man he is trying to be.
As great as that was, Drew still knew about Bode’s past with drugs and jail. So, why would he give Bode a little bag of pills?
If his concern was with Bode’s injury, he could’ve referred him to a really good doctor. Preferably a therapist because that’s the help he really needs.
Is there something in the town’s water because none of the adults were acting right on this episode?
Let me be the first to say that if you read the Fire Country Season 3 Episode 13 Spoilers, you know we were expecting a very different story from Bode and Uncle Luke.
First, how has he not left for Japan yet? From the way it was discussed on Fire Country Season 3 Episode 10, everything seemed to be moving pretty quickly.
Regardless, the promo for “My Team” seemed to set Uncle Luke up to give Bode some pretty terrible advice.
However, Luke’s line to Bode about “picking his poison” conveniently left out his saying, “You’ll have to lean on someone.”
It was a sneaky trick, but nothing compares to the misdirection that was Constance Zimmer’s (Good Trouble) Renee. That better not have been all we see of the actress, either.
Listen, I understand that sometimes a character is brought in solely to create brief but entertaining drama.
However, you don’t bring in a powerhouse of talent like Zimmer just for a few scenes that amount to a handful of minutes.
While Fire Country is no stranger to using and losing characters, this would be a colossal waste of Constance Zimmer’s talent.
Not to mention, it was pretty weak drama from the start. After thirty years of marriage, you’re telling me Sharon was worried about Vince proposing to his high school girlfriend?
Is this a CW show? Are we watching a Riverdale spinoff?
While little things like that can come up at any point in a marriage, that’s not the kind of relationship Fire Country has established for Vince and Sharon.
They have weathered everything under the sun, including losing a child. It makes zero sense that Sharon would treat this like a big deal after all she and Vince have overcome.
On the flip side, I’m still trying to figure out Jake’s deal.
As Great as Jake Is, It’s Time for Fire Country to Stop Forcing The “Dad” Arc on the Character
The biggest sign of fiction on “My Team” has to be that Jake would strike out with anyone.
Besides the fact that he’s a sweet and fantastic guy, the actor Jordan Calloway (Black Lightning), who plays him, is ridiculously handsome. That’s just an objective truth.
So, no, I didn’t buy that Jake “struck out” at the bar since I can’t imagine alcohol consumption made him any less attractive.
Jake’s issue is that he is still stuck on Cara and her sister/daughter Gen. Did they have a cute relationship? Sure. Were they headed down a good path? Absolutely.
That still doesn’t explain why Jake is holding onto the relationship. Especially when the time since the relationship ended has exceeded the amount of time he was actually in it.
Sabina Gadecki’s (LA’s Finest) Cara has been gone since Fire Country Season 2 Episode 5. It’s sweet that he wants to look after Gen and be her dad, but it’s really time for the character to let it go.
Gen needs to be with her biological dad and siblings out in Idaho or wherever.
Besides, Jake is way too young and hot to go down the “dad” road when he needs to be out there putting that handsome face to good use.
At the very least, it’ll free up some of his time to be a friend because Eve will definitely need one.
Fire Country Has Reached Another Fork in the Road Where They Can Either Backtrack or Advance the Story. It All Comes Down to the Show’s Level of Creativity
While this isn’t the first time Three Rock has seen a death in the team, with Rebecca dying at the end of Fire Country Season 1 Episode 15, this one might have been avoidable.
We likely all thought the same thing at the end when Birch died: He might have lived if Eve had sent him to the infirmary.
However, there’s no use in pondering “what ifs” all day. Especially not when it doesn’t undo all the amazing things that Three Rock has accomplished.
Eve has put in the time and effort to be the kind of captain Three Rock could be proud of. Still, it will likely devastate her for the foreseeable future.
For once, Manny’s experience as a captain may be the only thing that can get Eve over this tragedy.
Hopefully, none of this will come back down on Eve. There must be protections in place for this sort of thing because it was still Birch’s call not to get advanced care.
It would be a shame to see all the hard work Eve and Manny have put in on Fire Country Season 3 just for it to be washed away with one unfortunate accident.
Also, just to backtrack briefly, what happened to the female inmates at Three Rock? Did that part of the program get shut down?
Oh, well. There are still plenty of side characters for CBS‘s Fire Country to send away and/or kill off. Half the fun is never knowing who’s leaving the country or who will end up under a tree.
Do you think Bode is going to start using drugs again?
Did it seem out of character for Sharon to be so hung up on something that happened over thirty years ago?
