Top-division club Freiburg’s players warmed up in shirts reading: “Our values, our choice, together for democracy” ahead of their 5-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday.
Freiburg coach Julian Schuster said beforehand that the election was “more important than one soccer game”.

The German soccer league issued its own appeal to vote earlier this month, saying: “Our shared team is called democracy”.
Thomas Weikert, president of Germany’s national Olympic committee, called this week on sports club members to vote.
