Which Is Better For You? – Forbes Health

CBD is more well-known than CBN, and one 2023 survey of over 1,000 participants found that while 72% of survey participants have heard about CBD, only 17% were familiar with CBN. Research notes that there are fewer controlled, human studies on the health effects of emerging cannabinoids, including CBN.

Adam Perlman, M.D., an integrative and functional medicine expert and a Forbes Health Advisory Board member, says that CBD has been studied more extensively than CBN. Still, it’s common for CBD and CBN to be combined in products designed to promote sleep, he adds.

“CBD is non-intoxicating and is primarily known for potential anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety and pain-relieving properties,” says Dr. Perlman. Meanwhile, “CBN has mild psychoactive effects—though much weaker than THC—and is most commonly associated with sedative effects, leading to its reputation as a sleep aid.”

Indeed, research notes that the therapeutic benefits of CBD and CBN differ. Potential therapeutic benefits of CBD may occur in the following conditions:

  • Anti-anxiety
  • Anti-seizure
  • Movement disorder
  • Pain
  • Arthritis
  • Addiction
  • Sleep disorders, such as insomnia

Meanwhile, research suggests the following as potential therapeutic benefits of CBN:

  • Antimicrobial
  • Appetite stimulant
  • Sedative
  • Insomnia
  • Glaucoma

Keep in mind that CBD and CBN products are not regulated by the FDA for safety and efficacy, and come with their own risks. Though both cannabinoids are thought to be generally well-tolerated, the long-term risks of both are still being evaluated.

According to the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), short- term use of CBD may result in changes in mood and alertness, potential drug interactions and gastrointestinal distress like diarrhea, among other symptoms. Long-term risks may include liver injury and male reproductive toxicity.

Additional research on the short and long-term side effects of CBN is needed.

If considering a CBD- or CBN-based product, look for a high-quality product that provides a Certificate of Analysis (COA) verifying third-party testing and features trustworthy ingredients. Speak with your health care provider before adding CBD or CBN to your routine to determine which is best for your needs and the proper dosage to use.
